Which ACCA Paper Should You Take First?
You have registered with ACCA, you are looking at three Applied Knowledge papers, and you have to pick one. This choice matters more than most students realise. Choose well and you build momentum. Choose badly and your first experience of ACCA is a failed paper.
Here is the recommendation we give the 354 students who have studied ACCA with us, and the reasoning behind it.
The short answer
Start with Business and Technology (BT/FBT). For the large majority of students, this is the right first paper.
Why Business and Technology first
- It assumes the least. BT does not require prior accounting knowledge. You can succeed at it from a standing start, which is not equally true of the other two.
- It teaches the vocabulary. Governance, internal control, stakeholders, organisational structure. These terms recur throughout the entire qualification. Learning them here makes every later paper easier to read.
- It is broad rather than deep. The reasoning is more familiar to most people than the technical mechanics of double entry.
- Momentum is real. Passing your first ACCA exam changes how you approach the second. That confidence is worth more than saving a few weeks.
Then Financial Accounting
Financial Accounting (FA/FFA) is the technical heart of the early qualification: double entry, ledgers, trial balances, financial statements and the standards behind them.
Take it second, because it is the paper the rest of your ACCA studies build on. Almost everything technical that comes later assumes you can prepare and interpret a set of financial statements without hesitating. If you are shaky here, you will be shaky for years.
This is also the paper where students most often underestimate the gap between reading and doing. You do not learn double entry by watching. You learn it by working through entries until the logic is automatic.

Management Accounting (MA/FMA) covers costing, budgeting, variance analysis and performance measurement, the internal information a business uses to make decisions.
It is often taken third. It is more numerical and formula driven than BT, and it is easier once you are comfortable with how costs behave, which the earlier papers help with.

The BT, FA, MA sequence is a default, not a rule. Change it when:
- You already work in accounting. If you prepare accounts daily, FA may be your fastest first pass because you already know the material in practice.
- You have exemptions. A relevant degree may exempt you from some papers entirely. Confirm with ACCA before planning.
- You are strong with numbers but weak on theory. Some students find MA more natural than BT. If that is genuinely you, start there.
Can you sit more than one at a time?
You can, and some students do. Be honest about your hours. Two papers at once with a full time job is how good students end up resitting both. One paper passed properly beats two rushed.
Before any of them, close your gaps
If accounting is genuinely new to you, spend a few weeks on the fundamentals before your first exam fee. It is free, and it is the difference between finding FA hard and finding it impossible.
