How to Start ACCA in Somalia: A Complete Beginner Guide
If you want a career in accounting, finance or audit, the ACCA qualification is one of the strongest routes available to you. It is recognised internationally, it does not require you to leave Somalia to begin, and you can study for it while you work. This guide explains exactly how to start, what it costs, which paper to sit first, and how to prepare without wasting money.
We have taught more than 12,196 students on Sheerxirfad, and 369 of them have studied with us specifically for their ACCA papers. What follows is the process we walk our own students through.
What is ACCA, in plain terms
ACCA stands for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. It is a professional accounting qualification made up of exams you sit in stages. When you finish the exams, gain the required practical experience and complete the ethics module, you become a qualified chartered certified accountant.
Two things make it well-suited to students in Somalia. First, it is portable. The same qualification is understood by employers in Mogadishu, Nairobi, Dubai and London. Second, you can study for it remotely and sit exams at approved centres in the region, so you can begin without relocating.
Who can start ACCA
There are two common starting points.
You have no formal qualifications yet. You can begin with the Foundation level entry route and progress from there.
You already hold a degree in accounting or finance. You may be exempt from some early papers, so you start further along.
Always confirm your own entry route and any exemptions directly with ACCA, because exemptions depend on the exact institution and degree you hold.
The Foundation level, and why it matters most
The Foundation level is made up of three Levels. This is where everything begins, and where most students either build momentum or lose it. If you already have basic accounting, you can start at the Diploma level, and once you complete it you jump straight to the Skill level, meaning you sit Foundation and Applied Knowledge at the same time.
Business and Technology (BT/FBT). How businesses are structured, how they are governed, how people are managed, and how technology shapes all of it.
Financial Accounting (FA/FFA). Double entry bookkeeping, preparing financial statements, and the standards behind them. This is the paper the rest of your accounting knowledge is built on.
Management Accounting (MA/FMA). Costing, budgeting, variance analysis and performance measurement, which is the information businesses use to make internal decisions.
Our advice to nearly every beginner is the same: start with Business and Technology. It is the most approachable of the three, it introduces the vocabulary used across the whole qualification, and passing it early builds the confidence you will need for Financial Accounting.
Study each of the three with us
We teach all three papers in structured video courses you can follow at your own pace, with tutor support when you get stuck.
Build your foundation first, for free
Here is the mistake we see most often. A student registers with ACCA, pays the exam fee, and only then discovers that the basics of debits and credits were never solid. The exam fee is lost and confidence goes with it.
You can avoid that entirely. We publish 23 free courses on Sheerxirfad, and several of them cover exactly the ground you need before your first ACCA paper. They cost nothing, so there is no reason to skip this step.
Diploma in Financial Accounting 1, the natural first step if accounting is new to you
Diploma in Financial Accounting 2, which continues from the first
Principles of Accounting, for the core concepts and vocabulary
QuickBooks Online Complete, practical bookkeeping used by real businesses
Excel for Business Data Analysis, a skill every accountant is expected to have
A sensible sequence is simple: work through the free accounting foundations, then start Business and Technology, then register with ACCA once you know the material is within reach.
Step by step, from today
Check your entry route. Confirm with ACCA which level you qualify to start at and whether you have exemptions.
Fill the gaps for free. Work through the free accounting courses above until debits, credits and financial statements feel comfortable.
Register as a student with ACCA. You register directly with ACCA and pay their registration fee. Fees are set by ACCA and change over time, so always check the current amounts on their official website.
Pick your first paper. For most beginners this is Business and Technology.
Study consistently. A steady schedule beats intensity. Students who study a few focused hours several times a week outperform those who cram before the exam.
Book the exam only when you are ready. On demand exams at the Applied Knowledge level mean you can sit when your preparation is genuinely complete.
Practise under exam conditions. Timed practice is what turns knowledge into marks.
What it realistically costs
Your total cost has three parts: the one time ACCA registration fee, the annual subscription, and the exam fee for each paper. All three are set by ACCA and are paid to ACCA directly, not to us. Because they are revised periodically, check the current figures on the official ACCA website before you budget.
The part you control is tuition. Our Applied Knowledge courses are a fraction of the cost of classroom tuition, and the foundational material is free, so the money you do spend goes into exam fees rather than into relearning basics.
How long it takes
Students who study consistently often clear the three Applied Knowledge papers within a year, though the honest answer is that it depends on your starting point and how many hours you can protect each week. Someone studying full time moves faster than someone working a full time job. Both routes work. Consistency matters more than speed, and a paper passed properly is worth more than three papers rushed.
Our students, and what they have achieved
Across the platform we have taught over 12,196 students, with 369 studying ACCA papers with us. Among them are students who have gone on to place at the very top nationally and internationally in their ACCA examinations.
You can read their stories on our student success stories page. They started where you are now.
Common mistakes to avoid
Registering before you are ready. The registration fee is not refunded because you were not prepared.
Skipping the foundations. Financial Accounting is unforgiving if double entry is shaky.
Studying without practice questions. Reading notes feels productive. Answering timed questions is what actually raises your mark.
Studying alone with no support. When you are stuck on a concept for a week, a tutor answers it in ten minutes.
Choosing a hard paper first. Momentum is real. Start where you can win.
